Stereotyping and Sensitivity

“Stereotyping is the act of assigning certain characteristics or traits to individuals based on their membership in a particular group. These assumptions can be unconscious and influenced by societal norms, media portrayals, or personal experiences. Sensitivity, on the other hand, involves being aware of and considerate towards the diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences of others.

In the real world, stereotyping can manifest in various ways, such as assuming someone’s intelligence based on their race, or attributing certain behaviors to a person because of their gender. These stereotypes can be harmful as they limit individuals’ opportunities and perpetuate biases.

To become a kinder, nicer person, it’s essential to recognize and challenge our own stereotypes by actively seeking to understand others as individuals rather than fitting them into preconceived categories. This involves practicing empathy, listening without judgment, and celebrating the uniqueness of each person.

Throughout the program, attendees will explore examples of unintentional stereotyping and learn practical strategies to cultivate sensitivity and promote inclusivity in their interactions with others.
